Calorie Budgeting

January 1st, 2009

As per the calorie based weight loss research of USDA, it is suggested that to lose 1 pound you need to consume 3500 calories less or burn 3500 calories more than your Body Requirement.

Based on this research, we created Weekly and Daily Calorie Budgets for you to keep you on track to reach your weight loss goal.

What is my Weekly Calorie Budget?

Your Weekly Calorie Budget is the total number of calories that you should limit to in a week, to achieve your goal.

How do you calculate that?

The amount of calories that your body requires to function depends on your Age, Gender, Height, Weight and your daily activity level. From all the data that you fill up in your profile, we calculate the number of calories that your body usually needs. As per your goal (that you set on LifeMojo), we calculate the number of calories that you would have to reduce in the food intake and show the difference as your Calories budget.

What is my Weekly Progress?

We split your weekly calorie budget in to 7 equal parts and show you the calorie budget for a day. We understand that all your days cannot be alike, you would be able to save more calories than required on some days and you might want to go out and enjoy once in a while (which is ok!). So we keep track of your weekly calorie budget and add up all the calories that you save from your food budget in your previous days.

How do I increase my Calorie Budget?

The best way to increase your Calorie Budget is to increase your daily activities. As you log your activities on LifeMojo, we increase your food budget for that day and for that week as well.

New Year Resolutions

January 1st, 2009

Each year, millions of people follow the annual ritual of making New Year’s resolutions. Some will succeed, some will stumble. What is the secret to New Year’s resolution success?

Lot of you would have made a New Year resolution to lose weight / get back in shape / build stunning six pack abs etc. It is good to have a healthy new year resolution, but it is also important to understand how to get there. The resolve is strong initially, so in order to get to reach our goal fast, we often tend to take short cuts like crash diets or working out too hard. Keep in mind that its your New Year’s resolution and not first few days of New Year’s resolution. You have to be able to sustain the weight loss or workouts to get to your goal. We would advise you to go slow and steady to win this race!

A 3-4 Kgs weight loss per month is the recommended rate at which you should lose weight. If you stick to this range per month, the weight loss is more likely to be permanent than the quick weight loss that you would regain soon.

Small changes can make a major impact. Start walking for 30 minutes, five times a week and see the difference. This would also lower the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, colon cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure etc.

Health Ministry comes up with obesity guidelines for India

November 27th, 2008

The BMI—considered the individual’s fitness and obesity indicator—is the ratio of the body weight in kg versus height in m^2.

Key Points in the new guidelines :

  • A person with a body mass index of 23 kg/m2 will now be considered overweight and below that as one with normal BMI—unlike the cut-off limit of 25 kg/m2 earlier.
  • Those with BMI of 25 kg/m2 will be clinically termed obese (as opposed to 30 kg/m2 at the international level) and those with BMI of 32.5 kg/m2 will require bariatric surgery to eliminate excess flab.
  • According to guidelines, cut-offs for waist circumstances will now be 90 cm for Indian men (as opposed to 102 cm globally) and 80 cm for Indian women (as opposed to 88 cm at the international level).

The guidelines were released jointly by the Health Ministry, the Diabetes Foundation of India, the All-India Institute of Medical Science (Aiims), Indian Council of Medical Research, the National Institute of Nutrition and 20 other health organisations.
