Launching LifeMojo

November 17th, 2008

Launching LifeMojo was a great experience. We had the B2B version of the product up and running, so one school of thought was, “it is a great product and let us launch the same product for B2C”.

We realized since majority of the people do not plan their diet the way nutritionists do, so the value that our B2B features provide to the nutritionists might not be of great value to our B2C users, we started thinking about what do the Users care about. The unanimous answer that we got when we asked a few people around was “CALORIES”. Interesting thing is, most of the nutritionist work on the three dosha defined in Ayurveda : vata, pitta, kapha. So it was a bummer! We had to redesign the flows, the planning and tracking features and had to put in a LOT of relevant content, to cover most of the common topics that people like to know.

Although there are ways to figure out your body composition as per ayurveda using a simple questionnaire, but it is difficult for people to take much use of it while planning their diets and fitness regimen. We thought let us begin with the calories concept of foods and activities and then use ayurvedic principles to assist users to eat right.

We realized it would be of great value to the users, if we could give a way to do a quick calorie lookup of Indian food items. (It is interesting to see, there are not many places online that give you the calorific values, especially for the Indian food items). What’s more interesting is that just a value of 206 calories (in 1 scoop of Chocolate Ice Cream) doesn’t make any sense for a user, there has to be a comparison and it has to be something that I can relate to, like jogging for around 20 Minutes (most of the people know the effort required to jog for 20 minutes). Now if you compare 20 Minutes jogging with 1 scope of Chocolate Ice Cream, I am sure most of you won’t have Chocolate Ice Cream :-)

Another interesting thing was that, at a lot of places we saw BMI calculators that would just display 29.2 as your BMI. No information about what does that mean? What does this number translate to? So adding a context to this result was important. Also there are a lot of other calculators that aim to provide different information about one’s body, but we have never seen a comprehensive Body Analysis tool. So we decided to make one.

These are just examples; there is a lot of cool stuff in there… Go check it out!

We hope you find LifeMojo useful.
